OILDALE, Calif. — A water line failure caused a sinkhole near the busy junction of Airport Drive and Roberts Lane over the October 24–25 weekend, leading to traffic restrictions and a response by county public works crews.

According to KERO’s October 27 report, Kern County Public Works said the break involved a line operated by Oildale Mutual Water Company. One eastbound and one northbound lane remained closed during repairs, with traffic signals temporarily out of operation.

Why the site matters

The intersection is used by people traveling between neighborhoods, shopping areas and schools in northern Bakersfield and Oildale. Even partial lane closures can create queues and confusion for motorists and pedestrians. Officials urged drivers to slow down and allow more time for school pickups.

Are lanes still closed today?

The October 27 update is not a real-time road condition report for October 31. It provides a record of emergency repairs, not proof that every restriction remains in place. A separate report said crews expected a temporary roadway restoration around October 28; expected completion should not be treated as confirmed reopening.

Before traveling, consult Kern County Public Works and local agency traffic updates. State highway conditions can be checked using Caltrans QuickMap, although it does not cover every county street restriction.

Who is responsible?

The water utility and county road department have different roles in a broken line and damaged roadway. Property owners with a water outage should contact their water provider, while safety concerns on county roads should be reported to Public Works. Do not drive or walk around road barriers.
